Snipe Hunt: A mission to locate the most mysterious bird in the Southern Cone
Keywords
poster, species distribution modeling, climate change
Date
June 2024
Location
Chile
The Fuegian Snipe (Gallinago stricklandii) is a near-threatened woodcock-like shorebird with a small and declining population. Additionally, its secretive behavior and remote habitat has made it difficult for researchers to gather substantial data on the species.
This project used GIS and MaxEnt modeling to predict the distribution of the near-threatened Fuegian Snipe in Chile and Argentina. The models suggested a seasonal migration pattern and will guide future fieldwork locations. The findings will enhance conservation efforts and inform data-driven decision-making in environmental science.
